Nottinghamshire Police officer cleared of dangerous driving

A Nottinghamshire Police constable was cleared of dangerous driving after a judge at Leicester Crown Court directed the jury to acquit the officer following conclusion of the prosecution case.

PC Neil Copland had denied the charge which arose from an incident in Derby Road, Nottingham, on 4 December 2016 when the unmarked police car he was driving was in collision with a man on foot. The man, who had made off from a vehicle following a pursuit, suffered a broken knee.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has now advised us that having considered all the circumstances of the case, and after consultation with counsel, it had decided not to seek leave to appeal the judge’s decision to stop the trial.

The charge against PC Copland was authorised by the CPS after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Our investigation examined the circumstances of the incident and was completed in October 2017.
