OE: ‘Narrow mandate’: Europe reacts to Ursula von der Leyen’s election as Commission President

Open Europe surveys European politicians' and press reactions to the European Parliament's election of Ursula von der Leyen as EU Commission President. 

Following days of discussions with political groups in the European Parliament (EP), former German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen was approved as the next EC President by a majority of MEPs on 16 July. 383 voted in favour, 327 were against and 22 abstained. She needed a majority of 374 to become the first female Commission President.
