Ordnance Survey is delighted to announce a
new five year agreement with SweetSpot, the organisers of The Tour of Britain,
to become the official Mapping Partner across their portfolio of cycling
events.
The
agreement will see detailed and trusted mapping from Ordnance Survey being
used across The Friends Life Women’s Tour, Pearl Izumi Tour Series, Tour
Ride 100 and The Tour of Britain events. The digital mapping from
Ordnance Survey will provide vital information and insight to the event
organisers, cycling teams, individual cyclists and the thousands of spectators
who will be attending the events.
Nick Giles, Managing Director of Ordnance Survey
Ltd, said: “We are excited to be able to announce
Ordnance Survey’s sponsorship of The Tour of Britain. We have had a
good relationship with The Tour for a number of years and are delighted to
strengthen this, and at the same time show our commitment to be the number one
provider of mapping to cyclists across Great Britain. The agreement also
builds on the recent launch of our new free cycling app, OS Ride, which allows
road cyclists to ride the routes of the professionals.”
Commenting on the announcement, Alastair Grant,
Commercial Director of SweetSpot said: “We are delighted to be renewing
our partnership with Ordnance Survey at a time when the sport is moving in
exciting new directions and fans are looking for ever more detail on routes and
rides.
“Ordnance Survey will enable us to provide
spectators coming to all of our events with access to more information on the
routes and surroundings than ever before, while we are also discussing some
exciting opportunities for new content we can supply thanks to the data and
expertise of Ordnance Survey.”
Ordnance Survey’s trusted mapping will enable
organisers to accurately plan event stages, allow teams to analyse the routes,
taking into account height and elevation data and provide a platform to deliver
vital information to the public on road closures, viewpoints and the locations
of amenities. Ordnance Survey will be working with SweetSpot to provide a
variety of products and offers for spectators and fans of all
races.
Nick added: “Mapping is recognised as a vital tool
to help deliver events and it is great that Ordnance Survey data can be
used across a number of areas of this fantastic cycling programme. I am
particularly excited to see how the cycling teams, professionals and thousands
of general cyclists use our mapping. With Ordnance Survey, users can
access and play with mapping which delivers unrivalled accuracy providing
valuable insight into the routes and surrounding areas for any
ride.”
