Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Julie James, has welcomed figures showing that Jobs Growth Wales, the Welsh Government’s youth employment programme, has filled 14,094 job opportunities.

Since the programme began in 2012, 1,941 job opportunities have been filled in Cardiff, 1,373 in Rhondda Cynon Taf, 1,160 in Caerphilly and 1,118 in Swansea. Similar levels of success have been seen in Carmarthenshire (733 filled jobs) Newport (718) and Bridgend (632).

The programme has created a total of 16,888 job opportunities across Wales.

January’s statistics show that during the last month this European Social Fund-backed programme successfully offered job opportunities to 185 job hunters.

This flagship Welsh Government programme provides unemployed young people aged 16-24 with a job opportunity for six months. Jobs Growth Wales helps employers to grow their business by paying the young person’s salary, with the hope they will be offered sustained employment after six months.

The latest figures published on the Welsh Government’s website, success rates for the programme continuing, with eight out of ten young people working in the private sector progressing into employment or further learning after completing their Jobs Growth Wales six month opportunities.

Welcoming the latest figures the Deputy Minister said:

“I’m very pleased that businesses continue to recognise how the programme can benefit them. I’m committed to us working more closely with employers to develop increased co-investment and go forward with our ambitions to build a highly skilled workforce.

“Every filled Jobs Growth Wales opportunity means that an employer is able to expand their business and another young person is on their way to a new career.

“Jobs Growth Wales plays an important role in helping young people across Wales into paid, meaningful employment.”
