Preferred options to replace A55 roundabouts to go on show

Members of the public are being invited to take a detailed look at the preferred options to replace the A55’s only roundabouts.

In April, Transport Minister Ken Skates announced Option D as the preferred route to replace the roundabout at Junction 15 Llanfairfechan and Option A selected for Junction 16 Penmaenmawr and Dwygyfylchi.

For Junction 15, Option D would allow movement on and off the A55 in four directions, two eastbound and two westbound, by utilising an overbridge with a T-junction to the north of the A55 and a priority junction to the south of the existing roundabout. The slip roads to the north would be raised locally to allow the bridge to pass over the A55.

Option A at Junction 16 would provide a four-way movement, replacing junction 16A. The roundabout at junction 16 would be replaced by westbound on and off slip roads. The junction 16A arrangement would include an overbridge and slip roads would be constructed on raised embankments. A new link road would be constructed, running parallel to the A55, linking back into Ysguborwen Road.

The WelTAG appraisal concluded that both selections were the best performing when measured against the project objectives and the WelTAG criteria.

Construction could start in summer 2021 and be completed by the end of 2022.

The information sessions where people can see further details and learn more about the preferred options will be held:

All exhibitions will take place between 10:00 and 20:00 and everyone is welcome to attend.

Transport Minister Ken Skates yesterday said:

Replacing the roundabouts at Junction 15 and 16 with height separated junctions will improve journey times and make this section of the A55 safer for all road users.

This is a significant part of our proposals to improve North Wales transport infrastructure over the coming years and the scheme will allow traffic to flow more smoothly without having to slow down at a roundabout as well as strengthen the route’s resilience.

The preferred options I have chosen will deliver on our objectives and ensure this section of the A55 is fit for the future.

The information sessions offer an excellent opportunity for people to learn more about the scheme and the next steps.
