Public views of policing continue to inform HMIC inspections

Once again, the majority of people in England and Wales feel safe in their local neighbourhoods according to a report commissioned by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC). The findings also showed that three times as many people are satisfied with their local police compared to those who are dissatisfied.

The survey, conducted by Ipsos Mori, provides insights into current perceptions of crime, safety and local policing, as well as contact with the police.

Conducted during 2016, the survey also asked about public opinions on the priorities and responsibilities of the police and views around online crime and anti-social behaviour.

HMIC uses these public opinions to develop the criteria for the PEEL inspection programme to ensure that the views of the public inform how policing is inspected, designing inspections in the public interest.
