Reforming Local Government responses disappointingly low

The Minister for Public Services, Leighton Andrews has expressed his disappointment with Local Authorities who failed to respond to a Welsh Government consultation.

The Reforming Local Government White Paper was published in July. It responded to the findings of the Commission on Pubic Service Governance and Delivery and set out proposals for the future shape of Local Government in Wales.

With over 170 responses received from a range of stakeholders and members of the public, only 11 Local Authorities came forward with suggestions and ideas.

The Minister said:

“I am disappointed half of the Local Authorities in Wales had nothing to say about how we shape Local Government in Wales. After all, it’s their future and the future of their local communities we were discussing.

“I am clear about my ambition for local government in Wales. I want to see Councils who engage with their communities and – who consistently offer strong performance, strong democracy and good governance.”

The responses submitted before the deadline of October 1st were analysed and are on the Welsh Government website. Those submitted after the consultation closed were also taken into consideration.

There was a general consensus running through many of the replies, with respondents agreeing on areas such as community engagement. However, the questions set by the consultation document also elicited a wide range of suggestions.

Leighton Andrews added:

“I have analysed the detailed feedback from the White Paper and will consider the suggestions further when designing the blueprint for the future of Local Authorities in Wales.”
