SQA helped promote the varied career opportunities available in Scotland’s rural industries, by celebrating the sector’s top trainees at Lantra Scotland’s Land-based and Aquaculture Learner of the Year Awards.

SQA joined finalists at the awards ceremony as sponsors of the Modern Apprentice of the Year category. Lantra Scotland is the sector skills council for land-based, aquaculture and environmental conservation industries, and these awards highlight to employers the importance of investing in skills.

Apprentices in Scotland’s rural sector gain hands on experience whilst working towards a SQA qualification, providing employers with a skilled workforce. Finalists in the Modern Apprentice category represent a variety of industries, including: Mixed Farming; Horticulture and Aquaculture.

Announced on the evening as Modern Apprentice of the Year was Janis Brivkalns, a Modern Apprentice in Aquaculture with The Scottish Salmon Company. Janis is doing his apprenticeship through Perth College UHI.

Graham Campbell, SQA Regional Manager, said: “The finalists at this year’s Lantra Scotland Awards reflect the huge variety of exciting learning opportunities which the country’s rural sector provides. Their success highlights the positive impact that investing in our young people can have on rural industries. Our Modern Apprentice finalists have shown dedication to gaining skills and qualifications that will help them make a valuable contribution to the sector for years to come.”

SQA congratulates all the finalists, and in particular our winner, Janis Brivkalns.
