Keir Mather MP

I wish to inform the House that the SS Richard Montgomery mast removal project has now been completed, with all 3 masts successfully removed and delivered to the Historic Dockyard Chatham. The wreck is a World War 2 cargo ship that sank in the Thames Estuary in 1944 while carrying an estimated 1,400 tonnes of munitions cargo.

The removal of the 3 masts was recommended by an expert advisory group formed to consider the management of the wreck. As the vessel has aged, the masts continued to place significant load on the structure and their removal has reduced that risk and supports the long-term safe management of the site.

This was a complex project requiring specialist programme, engineering and risk management expertise to address a unique risk and a challenging site. Nonetheless, the project was completed ahead of schedule and below forecast costs. This was achieved through close collaboration between the Department for Transport (DfT), the United States Maritime Administration, industry and local partners and I would like to place on record my thanks to all those whose expertise and professionalism contributed to its successful delivery.

In recognition of the historic significance of the SS Richard Montgomery and its role in supporting the Allied forces’ efforts during World War 2, the recovered masts and associated artefacts have been transferred to the Historic Dockyard Chatham for conservation and preservation. This will help ensure that an important part of the region’s heritage is protected for future generations.

The wreck will continue to be subject to continuous monitoring and control via the established exclusion zone. Existing restrictions on flying in the vicinity of the site also remain in force.

The government remains committed to the safe and responsible management of the SS Richard Montgomery, with public safety remaining our highest priority.
