Shared Learning Awards: Judges reveal 20 shortlisted entries to be displayed at NICE annual conference

More than 60 entries received from organisations across the country which highlight how they put NICE guidance into practice.

Transforming mental health care for children and young people with long-term conditions; getting frail patients to get up and dressed on a surgical ward; and a journey to make an NHS foundation trust smoke free are among projects shortlisted for this year’s NICE Shared Learning Awards.

Now in their 13th year, the NICE Shared Learning Awards provide the opportunity for NHS services, local authorities and other organisations to showcase innovative and effective examples of how they have implemented NICE guidance.

This year 20 projects have been shortlisted from more than 60 entries.

All of the shortlisted entries will present posters at the NICE conference in May, where three finalists will also take to the stage to share their work.

The competition winner will be announced at the NICE conference in Manchester.

The 20 shortlisted entries are:

• University Hospital Southampton - The impact of Sherlock 3CG tip location and confirmation system (TCS) for PICC placement in our Radiology based vascular access service
• Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford CCG & Hastings and Rother CCG - Turning the tide on ineffective prescribing of glucagon like peptide (GLP-1) mimetics in type 2 diabetes in East Sussex
• NHS Improvement - Improving pre-meal patient hand hygiene compliance; a quality improvement collaborative
• The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Hallam University - No ifs No butts; Clatterbridge's Journey to a smoke free trust (using NICE guidance as a road map and a partnership)
• Norwood Surgery - Using a clearer explanation of the glycaemic index to implement NICE guidelines on diabetes, improve results and save drug budget money
• Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust - Developing a new pulmonary rehabilitation program tailored for interstitial lung disease with Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Interstitial Lung Disease service
• Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust - Implementation of a telephone appointment service. Improving access to Familial Hypercholesterolaemia cascade screening
• Thames Valley Strategic Clinical Network - Using NICE Quality Standards for antenatal and postnatal mental health to improve the quality of NHS services working with women during the perinatal period
• Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group - Oxfordshire Headache Pathway for the efficient diagnostic and management support of headache disorders
• University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust - Collaborating with community pharmacists to deliver sexual health services
• Lavenham Ward - Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust - “Get up, Get Dressed” - frailty care on a surgical ward
• Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - Behaviour Change: Enabling allied health professionals to have healthy conversations
• Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - The Respiratory Infections Team - a novel paradigm in the management of community acquired pneumonia
• University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust - The scarred liver project
• Central and North West London & London North West University Healthcare NHS Trusts - Alcohol withdrawal management for acute admissions to hospital
• King’s College Hospital in collaboration between several NHS Trusts and the British Dietetic Association - Development of black and minority ethnic (BME) patient-centred dietary resources to improve hyperkalaemia in chronic kidney disease patients
• Trim Tots CIC - Planet Munch healthy lifestyle programme focusing on childhood obesity
• East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust - NICE Guidance and Quality Standard Assurance : A process change to improve effectiveness and efficiency
• Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust - Transforming mental health care for children and young people with long-term conditions: Mental health and psychological wellbeing drop-in centre
• Pancreatic Cancer UK & University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust - A model of fast-track surgery for pancreatic cancer to implement the NICE guideline recommendations for the management of operable patients

Last year’s prize was scooped by East Berkshire Clinical Commissioning Group for their project to reduce incidence of urinary tract infections by promoting hydration in East Berkshire care homes.
