Sir Bruce Keogh update on review of professional codes of practice

16 Jul 2015 02:43 PM

Following publication of the Report of the Morecambe Bay Investigation, Sir Bruce Keogh, National Medical Director, was asked to review the professional codes of practice of doctors and nurses and to ensure that the right incentives are in place to prevent people from covering up, instead of reporting and learning from mistakes.

In a letter to the Secretary of State updating him on the review, Sir Bruce has confirmed that the codes, as far as they go, are fit for purpose. Sir Bruce has also confirmed his intention to work with the professional regulators to see what further incentives could be agreed to ensure all NHS staff – whether clinical or managerial – are more open. Sir Bruce will complete the review by the end of October.
