Two nominees of the Turner Prize 2017 have been selected from exhibitions at Arts Council England supported galleries in the Midlands.

Since 1984, the Turner Prize has been awarded to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work and this year, two nominees have been selected because of their Nottingham-based exhibitions.

Lubaina Himid has been nominated for her participation in the group exhibition The Place is Here at Nottingham Contemporary, as well as her solo exhibition at Modern Art Oxford. Her work includes painting, installation, drawing and printmaking which addresses important questions of personal and political identity.

Hurvin Anderson has been selected for his solo exhibition Hurvin Anderson: Dub Versions at New Art Exchange in Nottingham, as well as another solo exhibition in Canada. Hurvin is a painter whose art draws on identity and belonging in an ever-changing society, inspired by art history alongside his own Caribbean heritage.
