VR to help us experience what ageing might feel like

Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery is helping people better understand the ageing process through the immersive power of Virtual Reality (VR)

British artist Lindsay Seers’ Care(less) is a highly original 360-degree film which uses VR technology to allow visitors to experience what it might feel like to be in the body of an older person.

The work is at Ikon from 15–23 February 2020, and invites people to step into a waiting room where they can wear a headset and immerse themselves in the 20-minute VR experience.

The piece is informed by case studies of individuals in the care system, and was created in response to new research by the University of Birmingham, University of Brighton and University of Lincoln, supported by the Wellcome Trust Enrichment Fund, into the experiences of older people receiving care they pay for themselves.
