Waste management in non-energy uses of nuclear technologies: Council adopts conclusions

20 Dec 2019 12:19 PM

The Council yesterday adopted a set of conclusions on managing the radioactive waste created by non-energy nuclear technologies, such as spent fuel from research reactors, radioactive waste from the production of radioisotopes, hospital radioactive waste and others. The conclusions highlight the importance of minimising radioactive waste and of ensuring responsible and safe handling, storage and disposal of waste. While pointing out that it is the responsibility of the member states to have a national policy for radioactive waste management, the Council also recognises that in cases where national solutions are not available or practicable, shared services and facilities could be considered as a viable alternative.
