West Midlands Police custody sergeant faces assault charges

17 Jul 2019 02:22 PM

A West Midlands Police sergeant is due to appear in court tomorrow (Thursday 18 July) charged with two counts of assault by beating.

The charges against PS Nathan Legend were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following our investigation which looked at the officer’s use of force against a man detained at the Perry Barr custody unit on 22 December last year (2018). Both charges arise from the same incident.

We began our investigation following a referral from West Midlands Police early in January and we referred a file to the CPS to consider criminal charges in June, when we also sent our investigation report to the force.

PS Legend will make his first appearance before Birmingham Magistrates Court.
