Many observers were waiting for the German elections to see where Berlin would steer Europe, and in the expectation that it could unlock Brexit discussions. Open Europe's Leopold Traugott analyses what the election results mean for Eurozone reform, Brexit negotiations and EU integration in general.

Despite Merkel’s nominal victory, she enters her fourth term considerably weakened, almost certainly depending on both the Free Democrats (FDP) and the Green Party for a majority in parliament.  Patching together this coalition will take time, probably until Christmas.
