Launching an interactive guide showing the pathways into the tech sector.
techUK has launched its online pathways guide highlighting the variety of routes into a tech career. The UK’s tech sector is growing at three times the rate of the rest of the economy creating exciting jobs that require a range of skills and talent.
Capitalising on the buzz around London Tech Week, techUK wants to promote tech careers and make the case for an inclusive and open sector, regardless of age, background or education. Following an introduction to the routes that can be taken, the site aims showcase the stories of those who have chosen to take that route and where they are now.
The website also looks to myth-bust some of the damaging stereotypes that still exist about the sector. These mainstream misconceptions are barriers to entry for and need to be addressed head on.
In order to effectively prepare our workforce in an everchanging digital economy, we need to inspire and support people into digital roles. By signposting different ways to enter the sector, techUK hopes to raise awareness of the opportunities available and the diversity of routes in.
Julian David, CEO techUK, commented:
“While a career in tech is attainable for people from different walks of life, it can be difficult, and sometimes overwhelming, to work out where to start. Often there is a lack of awareness of the career opportunities that exist and how to get to them.
“This pathways tool offers information in a way that is clear and digestible, to give individuals an opportunity to explore what a tech career could look like for them.
“It has never been a better time to get involved as the sector continues to transform and we have a responsibility to play our role in empowering people with the knowledge to grasp these opportunities.”
Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, said:
“Diversity makes good business sense, so it is great to see one of the leading voices of the UK tech industry working hard to encourage more people to consider a career in technology.
"The sector is a leading light of the UK economy, with figures out this week showing we have created a billion-dollar tech company every month since London Tech Week 2018.
"With the industry's array of challenging and rewarding careers, this initiative by techUK will help bust the myths for those who feel it is not for them."
