techUK Response to the NIS Directive Consultation

techUK and ITI welcomed the opportunity to comment on the DCMS consultation on the UK’s plans to transpose NIS Directive into UK legislation.

On Friday techUK and ITI welcomed the opportunity to comment on the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) consultation on the UK’s plans to transpose the EU Network and Information Systems (NIS) Directive into UK legislation.

Our members recognise the importance of cyber security in defending our critical network and information systems. Recent cyber-attacks, most recently the Wannacry and Petya ransomware attacks, have highlighted the adverse effects that cyber breaches can have on the UK economy. The resiliency and security of network and information systems is central to the UK’s growing digital economy, and we welcome a standardized approach to their defence across the EU.

The UK Government’s consultation proposals contain several areas that affect techUK and ITI members, both Digital Service Providers (DSPs) and cyber security companies that provide services to Operators of Essential Services (OES). Our consultation response focuses on these areas, including:

• Definitions
• Competent Authorities
• Security Measures
• Incident Reporting
• Penalties

We look forward to DCMS’ response and further engagement as we approach the implementation deadline in May 2018.
