Enhanced VAT Service Leading to Hundreds of Thousands Of Pounds NHS Savings

The complex field of NHS VAT is one of the areas that has benefited most from our recent investment in innovative technology and developing new services for the NHS.

In 2016, we worked closely with our NHS partners to introduce a unique NHS VAT automation tool that substantially improved the quality of our VAT compliance service. Since going live it has proved hugely successful, increasing both the efficiency and quality of our service to over 280 NHS organisations.

One of them, NHS Dudley Commissioning Group (CCG), which is responsible for planning and buying healthcare services for 315,000 local residents, saved around £40,000 in under claims in just 12 months - a saving that equates to the total annual healthcare budget for around 27 residents in the area. This is just one example of how our market-leading VAT tool is saving money for the NHS that can be better spent on patient care.

Launched towards the end of last year, our new VAT Consultancy Service is meanwhile delivering a high-quality, comprehensive service at great value to a number of NHS organisations. This builds on our core VAT compliance services, covering more specialist areas in VAT, which an organisation would previously have had to source in isolation from outside parties. By expanding this service, we are now providing a one-stop-shop for all VAT requirements - with all the VAT expertise the NHS needs in one place. Through this consolidated approach we anticipate potential savings of hundreds of thousands of pounds per NHS organisation.

For example, after submitting a recent capital VAT review on behalf of the University Hospitals of Leicester, the consultancy team agreed a 34.15% recovery with HMRC worth around £438k. This was despite another adviser previously telling the Trust that no VAT recovery was likely.

The service is run by our dedicated team of expert advisers who have backgrounds at HMRC and the 'big four' accountancy firms. It is available through a one-off or tailored package, depending on an organisation's individual VAT requirements, and covers areas such as COS reviews, review of income liabilities, line-by-line capital reviews, partial exemption calculations, as well as ad-hoc VAT advice, such as contract reviews, liaison with HMRC and advice regarding restructuring.

In addition to our innovative VAT automation tool and brand new consultancy service, those working in NHS finance teams are also keeping up-to-date with the latest VAT topics - and any likely impact on the NHS - through our free bi-monthly newsletters and VAT seminars
