£65 million for free advice services to help the vulnerable

Vital frontline advice services across England will receive a multi-million pound support package as the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) launches the Advice Services Transition Fund. The Cabinet Office is supporting BIG’s programme by contributing half of the funding.

Alongside the launch of the £65 million fund, the Government is today publishing a review the not-for-profit social welfare advice sector in England. It shows that the Government has a role to play in supporting the sector to adapt to the new funding realities, but advice providers will also need to take the initiative and change the way they work. The report recommends that advice organisations should:

  • work more collaboratively together to build sustainability and effectiveness
  • take early action to prevent the problems which cause people to seek advice
  • diversify their funding streams and how they deliver  their services so they can be more resilient and sustainable in the long term
  • demonstrate their impact more effectively
  • use all appropriate channels to reach those in need of support
