Additional fee support scheme for FE trainee teachers

A new scheme to support fee subsidy for English and maths further education (FE) trainee teachers for the 2012/13 academic year has been launched.Up to £500 is available for up to 3,000 trainees under the new basic English and maths Further Education Teacher Training Awards scheme, which is being administered by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) on behalf of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS).  This scheme runs in parallel with the existing ITT fee awards scheme (see below), and trainees may only apply for one award.

Awards will be paid directly to the teacher-training provider in part-payment of the individual’s course fees.  Organisations are urged to apply on behalf of trainees as soon as possible, as awards are allocated on a first come-first served basis, with a closing date of midnight Thursday 14th February 2013.

To be eligible, trainees must be studying a recognised, stand-alone subject-specific qualification in adult literacy/functional English and/or numeracy/functional maths (level 5 equivalent) in England. The qualifications must be higher education institute or awarding organisation validated. Awarding organisation qualifications which already receive funding subsidy through the Skills Funding Agency are not eligible.

In addition, the third round of the Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Fee Awards has also been launched. Organisations that have registered for the scheme may now submit final claims, and further information for organisations that wish to register is available via the link below. The deadline for applications is midnight Friday 1 February 2013.

Details of eligibility and guidance on how to apply for the Basic English and maths Teacher Training Awards and/or the ITT Fee Awards are available via the Excellence Gateway.

Rob Wye, chief executive of LSIS said: “LSIS is delighted to be supporting the training of the FE teachers of the future - skilled and qualified teachers are the lifeblood of the FE sector. The ITT Fee Awards and the basic English and maths Teacher Training Awards are one way of ensuring that professionals with the right skills and expertise are able to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the further education and skills sector. Teachers in further education are shaping the future workforce of every sector in the English economy and LSIS is committed to supporting the pursuit of excellence in teaching in learning.”
