NEW CIOB-CIH JOINT AWARDING BODY

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) have been working in partnership to establish a suite of qualifications, which will offer a coherent programme of education for housing maintenance, repairs and development professionals. The aim is to support development, underpin progression and ultimately assist staff retention.

The Qualification and Curriculum Authority has approved the establishment of the CIOB-CIH Joint Awarding Body. This exciting new entity will offer a range of qualifications from Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) to a Level 4 Certificate / Diploma programme (HNC equivalent), covering maintenance management, repairs management and development.

Paul Wainwright CIOB Head of Education and Training said, "This qualification addresses the challenge for the CIOB to raise standards in the very important housing sector and improve the opportunities for employees to develop their full potential."

Martin Winn, CIH Director of Professional Development said: "CIH is delighted at the announcement; it is the latest development in our partnership with the CIOB. The new qualifications will address a skills gap in the industry, and contribute to a better educated and more professional workforce."

Over the next few months the CIOB and CIH will be accrediting centres to deliver these new courses.

CIH has over 20,000 individual members working for local authorities, housing associations, Arms Length Management Organisations, Government bodies, educational establishments and the private sector. Further information is available at: www.cih.org

The Chartered Institute of Building is the qualifying body for more than 42,000 construction professionals in over 100 countries worldwide. It has a Royal Charter to promote the science and practice of construction for public benefit, and has won recognition from Government, other professional bodies and the industry itself as being a central voice in construction.

'Making the Case for Housing' is a CIH initiative to influence the next Comprehensive Spending Review. It highlights the work of the housing sector not only in helping to deliver sustainable communities but also in supporting a much wider set of social priorities such as raising educational performance, improving health and reducing crime. Continued investment in housing is critical if we are to achieve our mission of contributing to the well-being of communities.
