Regulations changed to allow failed asylum seekers access to free healthcare

Amended Regulations to enable failed asylum seekers access to free healthcare will come into force on 15 July, Health Minister Edwina Hart announced last week.

Mrs Hart said in May 2008 that she intended to make the change and has since been consulting with the NHS and church leaders on the proposals.

The Health Minister said:

“I have made clear that the aim of these changes is to ensure that people who are in need of healthcare receive it. I believe the mark of a civilised society is the way in which it treats its people, particularly the sick and dying."
