Homeless Link responds to Government’s housing strategy

Yesterday, the Government published ‘Laying the Foundations: A Housing Strategy for England’, which aims to promote choice, flexibility and affordability and to "get the housing market moving again".

Responding to the strategy, Jacqui McCluskey, Director of Policy and Communications for Homeless Link said:

“Everyone has the right to a roof over their head.  With the number of homeless people on the rise and a chronic shortage of affordable housing, a credible plan from Government is vital.

“We support the objectives of the housing strategy published today, with the emphasis on improving the quality and affordability of homes, whilst bringing stability to the housing market. We also welcome the recognition of the role that having a stable home plays in promoting health and well-being.

“The strategy includes many positive initiatives, particularly the plans to make social housing fairer and extra money to bring more empty homes back into use.

“However, only time will tell whether the range of initiatives within the strategy will make a major and significant impact on the chronic shortage of affordable housing.

“We need to remember that this is not just about more buildings, it is about preventing the damage that homelessness causes to individual lives and communities.”
