£5m to support Welsh-medium education across Wales

The Minister responsible for the Welsh language, Leighton Andrews, has announced funding of more than £5m to support Welsh-medium education across Wales.

The Welsh in Education Grants are awarded annually to local authorities to help them improve and increase the provision of Welsh-medium education.

The money will be used to provide Welsh-language and Welsh-medium methodology training for teachers and practioners, follow-up support for those who have completed the Sabbaticals Scheme and for a range of Welsh language activities outside of school, such as Welsh books quizzes, events and residential courses.

This year an extra £200,000 has been allocated to new projects aimed at improving linguistic progression between primary and secondary schools, and increasing access to Welsh-medium education through late immersion programmes.

Local authorities are expected to match fund at least 33% of their allocation.

Mr Andrews said:

“I am committed to seeing the Welsh language thrive by providing people with access to Welsh-medium education and also by creating more opportunities for young people to use the language outside the school gates. This funding will develop and strengthen Welsh-medium education provision across Wales in line with our Welsh-medium Education Strategy.

This investment supports our new Welsh Language Strategy by funding projects which give young people more opportunities to use the language in informal settings, outside school.”

A total of £5.63m has been allocated for the 2012/13 financial year as follows:

£400,000 for projects aimed at improving linguistic progression between primary and secondary schools as well as increasing access to Welsh-medium education by means of late immersion programmes, £200,000 will fund the continuation of fourteen ongoing projects set up by the Welsh Language Board, with up to a further £200,000 being allocated to the establishment of new projects.

£200,000 for the WJEC Welsh in Education Support Team.

£5.03m for the Welsh in Education Grants for local authorities. Applications submitted by all 22 Local Authorities have been evaluated against set criteria and reflect the priorities identified by local authorities in their Welsh in Education Strategic Plans. Local authorities are expected to match fund at least 33% of their allocation.
