Chancellor visits Carlisle Businesses

BSW Timber to create 60 new jobs at Carlisle and Dalbeattie mills.

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has today visited businesses in Carlisle.

On his first stop, the Chancellor visited BSW Timber Group’s Carlisle sawmill. There he met Chairman, Martin Gale, who told him that the company is to create up to 60 new operational jobs at its Carlisle and Dalbeattie mills, thanks to rising demand for UK timber.

BSW employs 800 people at its six UK sawmills, which produce timber primarily for the UK’s construction, fencing and landscape market, as well as for export to Central Europe, North Africa and Asia. The company is in final stages of a a £70 million five-year investment programme.

The Chancellor went on to Cranstons Food Hall which has created 25 jobs, and Orton Grange Cafe.

While there he met with employees, many of whom were trained through the company’s apprenticeship scheme. The company has plans to enrol an additional two apprentices.

The Chancellor sampled their locally-produced Cumbrian foods, including Cumberland sausage and Herdwick Lamb.

Chancellor George Osborne said:

The government’s long term economic plan is working for Carlisle. The economy here is growing and unemployment is down.

Visiting BSW Timber today, I have been hugely impressed by the drive and determination I’ve seen. By continuing to work through our economic plan we will deliver economic security for families and a brighter future for all.
