£120,000 to help Scotland’s veterans

Veterans and members of the Armed Forces from across Scotland are to be helped further with an increase of £40,000 to the Scottish Veterans Fund announced tomorrow by Veterans Minister Keith Brown.

Formally announced at Veterans Scotland AGM (October 29, 2013) in Edinburgh, the increased funding will take the Scottish Veterans Fund budget to £120,000 for 2014/15.

Mr Brown said:

“This announcement by the Scottish Government to substantially increase our financial support available through the Scottish Veterans Fund shows our commitment to our Armed Forces and Veterans in Scotland.

“This additional funding support to a scheme that has already proved a resounding success with 70 projects delivered across Scotland through funding approaching half a million pounds will make a real difference to those needing additional help, support or advice

“Each year we allocate £80,000 to the scheme, and today’s announcement that Scottish Ministers have agreed to increase the fund by 50 per cent to £120,000 is further evidence of our wholehearted support for those who have and do serve in our Armed Forces. This is a considerable and significant increase. The money will provide even more resources to local and national organisations working to support our veterans.

“The work undertaken by Veterans Scotland to represent the interest of veterans’ organisations across Scotland and to promote support and good practice, is invaluable. We will continue to work with them in support of those of whom we ask so much.”

Martin Gibson of Veterans Scotland said:

“We welcome this significant increase in funding available to The Scottish Veterans Fund which has already improved the lives of many veterans and their families. Veterans Scotland will continue to ensure that information on support and advice is readily available to help veterans of all ages, their families and those who strive to assist them; this will include building on the success of the Roadshows throughout the country which enable engagement with local authorities, housing providers, health boards and practitioners, employers, other charities and community organisations.

“We will also promote comradeship activities at a local level, directly benefiting veterans across Scotland, by enabling them to take part in activities to enhance their confidence and well-being, integrate them into local communities and to increase their employment opportunities.

“We are grateful for the close working relationship that we have with the Scottish Government and the Ministers' commitment to our veterans.”
