David MacLennan has been appointed Her Majesty's Ambassador to the
State of Qatar in succession to David Wright who will be retiring
from the Diplomatic Service. Mr MacLennan will take up his new
appointment in June 2002.
CURRICULUM VITAE
Born 12 February 1945. Entered the Foreign Office in 1963.
From 1966 to 1969 studied Arabic at the Middle East Centre for Arab
Studies in Lebanon before joining the management staff of the Centre.
In 1969 was posted to the British Embassy in Aden as Third, later
Second Secretary. Returned to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in
1972 serving in the Western Organisations Department and then, as
First Secretary, in the Energy Department. From 1975 to 1979 was
First Secretary in the UK Delegation to the OECD in Paris. From 1979
to 1982 was First Secretary, Head of Chancery and Consul in Abu
Dhabi. Between 1982 and 1984 was Deputy Head of the North America
Department in the FCO. Seconded to the European Commission in
Brussels in 1984/85. From 1985 to 1988 was Deputy Head of Mission in
Kuwait and Deputy High Commissioner in Nicosia from 1989 to 1990. HM
Consul General in Jerusalem from 1990 to 1993. Head of Africa
Department (Equatorial) and Commissioner for the British Indian Ocean
Territories at the FCO from 1994 to 1996. HM Ambassador to Lebanon
from 1996 to 2000.
Married: he and his wife, Margaret, have two grown up daughters.
Interests include reading, gardening, golf, sailing and natural
history.
