23 Sep 2002 02:44 PM
The independent Police Complaints Authority is to supervise the
investigation into a fatal road traffic incident in which a man died
in Gorleston on Sea, Great Yarmouth.
In the early hours of this morning a Norfolk Constabulary patrol car
observed a Vauxhall Cavalier driving at speed in Beccles Road at
Gorleston. The car stopped at the next traffic lights and before an
officer could speak to the driver the traffic lights changed and the
Cavalier drove away at speed. The officers began to follow the car
but soon lost sight of it. A short time later they came across the
Vauxhall Cavalier which had crashed into a wall in Pavilion Road,
Gorleston.
The driver, who was the only person in the car, had been killed in
the collision. He has been named as Garie Monson, age 33, of Englands
Lane, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth.
The fatal road traffic incident is being investigated by the
Professional Standards Department of Norfolk Constabulary under the
supervision of the PCA.
PCA member Duncan Gear said: "This is a tragic incident and I will
ensure the investigation is carried out thoroughly and impartially on
behalf of the coroner.
"I would like to appeal to anyone who knows anything about this
incident to come forward and contact Inspector Neil Ferguson on 01953
424242."
