APPOINTMENT OF FULL-TIME ASSISTANT JUDGE ADVOCATE GENERAL

The Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine, has appointed Michael Robert Elsom
as a full-time Assistant Judge Advocate General with effect from 5th
June 2002.
Note to Editors
1. This appointment is made under section 31 of the Courts-martial
(Appeals) Act 1951, as amended by Schedule 10 to the Courts and Legal
Services Act 1990.
2. An Assistant Judge Advocate General officiates at Army and Royal
Air Force courts-martial in the United Kingdom and abroad. Their
duties also include giving post-trial advice on courts-martial and
other legal matters to the Army, The Royal Air Force and the Ministry
of Defence.
3. Mr Elsom (now aged 52) was called to the Bar in 1972 (Inner
Temple). Formerly in chambers at 5 Fountain Court in Birmingham, his
practice comprised 100% criminal work. This is Michael Elsom's first
full-time judicial appointment although he had been a part- time
Judge Advocate since February.
