HIGHWAYS AGENCY HOSTS A27 ASHCOMBE ROUNDABOUT EXHIBITION

18 Nov 2004 12:15 PM

Proposed road improvements to improve safety and access for drivers on the A27 will go on show at two exhibitions in Lewes, East Sussex from 22 November.

The exhibitions will take place at the Parish Hall in Kingston near Lewes on Monday 22 November from 5pm until 8pm and Lewes Town Hall on Thursday 25 November between 5pm and 8pm. Representatives from the Highways Agency will be attending both exhibitions to answer questions about the road improvement scheme.

Mick Cairnie, Highways Agency project sponsor, said:

"The two exhibitions will provide members of the public with an ideal opportunity to discuss the road improvement scheme for the A27 Ashcombe Roundabout."

The improvement scheme would include partially signalising the roundabout, improving access for drivers onto the roundabout from Lewes, and providing a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. A new signalised crossing would also be provided for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the A27.

The improvements are designed to reduce the speed of traffic on the A27 approaching the roundabout and to allow traffic on the A277 from Lewes to join the A27 more safely.

The layout of the roundabout would be changed and traffic signal control would be put in place. Skid resistant surfacing would be applied and a permanent speed limit of 50 mph would also be introduced.

3. Safe driving at roadworks

Safe driving at roadworks
In 2002, the year for which the latest figures are available, five roadworkers were killed and 29 seriously injured in the course of their work on Highways Agency roads.

Drivers approaching roadworks are advised to:
* Keep within the speed limit - it is there for your safety. * Get into the correct lane in good time - don't keep switching. * Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
* Be alert for works traffic leaving or entering roadworks. * Keep a safe distance - there could be queues in front. * Observe all signs - they are there to help you.
