Education and Skills Secretary Charles Clarke today announced the
appointment of a new Chair of the National College for School
Leadership Governing Council. Vanni Treves, Chairman of the London
Business School, will take up the post with effect from the beginning
of September following the retirement of Richard Greenhalgh.
The NCSL provides professional and practical support for England's
existing and aspiring school leaders, career-long learning and
development opportunities. The NCSL's goal is to help equip school
leaders with the skills, recognition, capacity and ambition to
transform the school education system into the best in the world and
ensure that every child is taught in a well led school.
Welcoming the appointment Mr Clarke said:
"I am delighted to announce this appointment. I am sure that he will
make an extremely important contribution to the College, which plays
a key role in the Government's drive to create a first class
education system."
Mr Clarke also paid tribute to Richard Greenhalgh who has chaired the
NCSL since its creation in 2000: "I would like to thank Richard
Greenhalgh for the outstanding work he has done as the NCSL's first
Chairman. Over the past four years he has overseen the development of
this flagship organisation dedicated to improving the quality of
school leadership and building a world-class teaching profession."
Heather Du Quesnay, Chief Executive of the National College for
School Leadership, welcomed the announcement of Vanni Treves'
appointment as chair of NCSL's governing council. She said:
"Vanni Treves brings an enormous amount of expertise and vision to
the role and I'm looking forward to working closely with him over the
coming months to develop the framework for the next phase of the
College's development."

1. The National College for School Leadership was established under
the 1998 Green Paper 'Teachers meeting the challenge of change' which
set out plans to establish a prestigious college to improve the
quality of school leadership.
2. The National College for School Leadership was launched in

benefit from the College many of their programmes and activities will
still be made available regionally and online.
4. The College's work includes providing a single national focus for
school leadership development, planning and learning; acting as a
driving force for world-class leadership in our schools and the wider
