DEDICATION REWARDED IN OPERATIONAL HONOURS
The bravery and dedication of members of the Armed Forces is
recognised today (Wednesday 30th September) as the Ministry of
Defence announced its operational honours for 2003. These awards
acknowledge the commitment and courage that British personnel
regularly display doing their jobs defending the nation and
supporting peace and humanity world wide.
Secretary of State, Geoff Hoon said;
"These awards highlight the exceptional achievements of our
servicemen and women during wide ranging operations, including in the
campaign against international terrorism. The recipients deserve our
wholehearted congratulations".
Honours and Awards to members of the Armed Forces recognise service
in Northern Ireland, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Sierra
Leone, Iraq (No Fly Zone), and the Congo, during the period 1st
October 2002 to 31st March 2003, and for miscellaneous
non-operational incidents.
Service personnel from all ranks and a variety of professional skills
are honoured and include:
OBE: Lt Col Barry Barnwell, Royal Marines Reserve, on a United
Nations peacekeeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo

repatriating tens of thousands of Rwandan Hutus. His dedication,
patience, humour and style have earned him praise at the highest
level.
MBE: Sqn Ldr Joanna Khan, a Royal Air Force Engineering Officer, was
based at Incirlik in Turkey as part of the support team for aircraft
policing the No Fly Zones over Iraq. Her outstanding professional
ability, care for others and moral courage rendered her central to
the detachment's operational output.
