NEW BOARD APPOINTMENTS FOR DESIGN COUNCIL

Lord Sainsbury, Minister for Science and Innovation, today announced the appointment of seven new members and extensions to the appointments of three Members of the Design Council. The appointments are effective from 1 January 2005. The Members join George Cox, who was appointed Chair of the Design Council from 1st September 2004.

The Design Council's purpose is to improve prosperity in the UK by enabling the best use of design in a modern global economy. It is a public body sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry working across the public and private sectors.

Lord Sainsbury said:

"I am delighted to announce the appointment of new members to the Design Council.

"The Design Council has a major programme of work ahead of it to spread the use of good design more widely, and I am very pleased that we have been able to appoint such a strong council to take this work forward."

2. All appointments have been made in accordance with the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments to the Design Council are made by the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA). All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public.

3. The Chair and members posts are all unpaid and appointments are made for 2 or 3 years.

4. A thorough review of the activities of the Design Council has taken place over the 18months, led by then Chairman, Sir Christopher Frayling and the Chief Executive, David Kester. The outcome of that review and of the DTI's Innovation Report are reflected in the Design Council's Corporate Plan to 2007.

Biographies

George Cox

George Cox recently retired as Director-General of the Institute of Directors. Starting as an aeronautical engineer, he became involved in computers in the mid-60's and spent most of his business career in IT. He formed a business in 1977, presiding over its growth and international expansion until it successfully floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1990. Before his role at the IoD, he was Chairman of Unisys in the UK and head of all Unisys service-based businesses throughout Europe.

Other roles have included serving on the Management Board of the Inland Revenue and the Boards of LIFFE (the London International Financial Futures Exchange), Bradford & Bingley, Shorts and the Supervisory Board of Euronext. He is also involved with a number of charities and academic institutions.

He was appointed chair of the Design Council in 2004.

John Hazelwood

John worked for Unilever until 1996, finally as Gloucester Birds Eye Wall's General Manager and Managing Director of Embisco (cones and wafers). He then set up his own Consulting Company and also undertakes a range of responsibilities within Gloucestershire, the region and nationally. This includes Senior Advisor for External Affairs to Birds Eye Wall's, chairing the West of England Development Agency as well as the Gloucestershire Development Agency and membership of the Business Links Advisory Accreditation Panel and the CBI National Manufacturing Council.

He was appointed a CBE in the 1994 New Year's Honours List for his services to training.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 1998.

Hamish Bryce

Hamish Bryce is currently chair of the Business Committee of the London Resilient Forum and a board member of Hendersons Strata Investments Plc.

Previously he was chairman of TLG plc, formerly the Thorn Lighting Group. He was appointed chief executive of Thorn Lighting in 1986, led the buyout from Thorn EMI in 1993, appointed chairman of the Group when it was floated in 1994 and he is a former Chairman of Hayward Williams Plc and Norcros Plc.

Hamish was commissioned into the Royal Engineers from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He went to Cambridge University, where he read engineering, graduating in 1966. A former Scottish international rugby player and Cambridge Blue, Hamish retains an active interest in rugby and other sports. He is married, with two children.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 1999.

Bonnie Dean

Chief Executive of Marshall Thermo King Ltd and previous CEO and P&L responsibility for turning round a variety of
engineering/manufacturing companies.

She has been Vice President Euromot, Germany, Vice president and member of the Finance Committee of EEF western, Bristol and currently sits on the EEF Economic Policy Committee (all unremunerated).

Naturalised British Citizen (born in US) She holds no other Ministerial appointments and has not taken part in any political activities during the last five years.

She was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2005.

Penny Egan

Penny Egan has been Executive Director of the RSA since 1998, having joined the organisation in 1986 and undertaken a variety of roles including leading the arts programme. She is also a Trustee of the Campaign for Learning and Animarts, a Board Member of the Design Council and a Commissioner for the Creative Industries in London. Previous posts include Head of the Press Office at the Craft Council Downing Street Press Officer during the Wilson and Callaghan governments.

She was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 1999.

John Hollar

More than 10 years of growing design-intensive, creative and technology based companies as CEO Penguin Television Ltd and Pearson Broadband Ltd in the UK and, before that, as Executive VP of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the US.

Was member of DTI delegation to France in 2003 to discuss broadband networking and content development. American, will apply for Leave to Remain in the UK once eligible.

He holds no other Ministerial appointments and has not taken part in any political activities during the last five years.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2005.

Professor Geoffrey Kirk

Chief Design Engineer, Civil Aerospace for Rolls Royce. Awarded The Royal Society British Bronze Medal 1998 in recognition of his influence on the design of large civil aircraft engine programmes, Rolls-Royce Fello - Design in 1999, The Gerald Frewer Memorial Trophy bu the Institution of Engineering Designers 2002 and Winner of the Prince Philip Designers Prize 2002. Royal Designer for Industry.

Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in the Principles of Engineering Design at Queen Mary, University of London, Visiting Professor in the Principles of Engineering Design at University of Nottingham, Member of the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre Steering Panel and Member of Aircraft Research Association Council.

He has held office at his local branch of the Conservative party. He holds no other Ministerial appointments.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2005.

Stuart MacDonald

Is Director of the Lighthouse, which is Scotland's national centre for Architecture, Design and the City and is central to the promotion of Scotland's architecture and creative industries policies. A founding member of the Scottish Architecture Education Trust, President of the Reseau European Art Nouveau Network and Vice-Chair of the world-wide Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society. Previously he worked for Glasgow 1999 City of Architecture and Design and Glasgow 1996 Internaitonal Design Festival. He has also been a visiting lecturer at Glasgow School of Art and the Universities of Dundee and Glasgow as well as external examiner at the University of Wales in Cardiff and De Montfort University. He was a member of the Ministerial working group on the Creative Industries in Scotland and editor fo Scottish Architecture 2000 - 2002. He is an Honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a member of the British Council Design Advisory Group and the NESTA Graduate Pioneer Programme Committee.

He holds no other Ministerial appointments and has not taken part in any political activities during the last five years.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2005.

Paul Priestman

Founding Director of Priestman Goode, the award winning London based product, environment and transport design consultancy, which has won major contracts for Heathrow Terminal 5, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, Coca Cola Schweppes, Fujitsu, Orange etc.

President of the DBA 2001-2003 and regular speaker on design.

He holds no other Ministerial appointments and has not taken part in any political activities during the last five years.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2005.

Jonathan Sands

Jonathan Sands was appointed CEO of Elmwood at the age of 26 and ran a management buyout of the company in 1988. They played a fundamental role in the turnaround of ASDA under Alan Leighton, (CEO) and Archie Norman, (Chairman), and became the lead consultant behind the FA 2006 World Cup Bid, producing the Bid itself. He became Chairman of Elmwood in January 2000.

In 1999 he was appointed Chair of RSA Design Advisory Group and joined RSA Council. Co-founded Design Yorkshire with Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman and raised circa 200,000 to stimulate the use of better design throughout the region.

He was also the youngest ever Chairman of Design Business Association 1995-7 and the first from outside London.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2000.

Richard Williams

A successful freelance design consultant and co-founder of Williams Murray Hamm, a leading brand consultancy. WMH has an international award-winning reputation for commercial and creative excellence and its client list includes Hovis, Unilever, Nestle and even S Club 7.

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the Chartered Society of Designers, a member of D&AD and The Marketing Society, he contributes regularly to Design Week magazine, comments on design matters for the BBC, he speaks publically and lectures regularly and sits on the external advisory panel at Surrey Institute.

He holds no other Ministerial appointments and has not taken part in any political activities during the last five years.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2005.

Chris Wise

A structural engineer and Fellow of the Riyal Academy of Engineering, formerly an Ove Arup partner who co-founded the engineering design practice Expedition in 1999.

First Professor of Creative Design at Imperial College, London and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institution of British Architects. Also a Royal Designer for Industry.

He lectures, writes and broadcasts widely, including BBC2's Building the Impossible series and Secrets of the Ancients, men of Iron C4, Building the Ultimate C5.

He holds no other Ministerial appointments and has not taken part in any political activities during the last five years.

He was appointed a council member of the Design Council in 2005.
