R A RECEIVES TWO APPLICATIONS FOR NORTH LONDON LICENCE

The Radio Authority's closing date for receipt of applications for the re-advertised Independent Local Radio (ILR) licence for a service on the AM (medium wave) band in North London, focusing upon Haringey and surrounding boroughs, was today (6 August).

Two applications have been submitted for this licence. The details of those applying are listed below, together with a brief outline of each group's proposed programme format:

LONDON TURKISH RADIO (TURKISH RADIO (UK) LTD.), the existing licensee - 185b High Road, Wood Green, London N22 6BA (contact: Mrs. Esin Pastirmacioglu, 07956 196002; or Kelami Dedezade, 07956 396424); to provide cultural, educational, entertaining and informative speech and music programming for the first, second and third generations of Turkish and Turkish- speaking communities in London;

TURK RADIO LTD. - 15-19 Shacklewell Lane, London E8 2DA (contact: Ramadan H. Guney, 0148 3472 222 or 07836 338766; or Ozkan Djemal, 020 8245 7504 or 07768 831230); to provide programmes mostly in Turkish and occasionally in English for the Turkish-speaking community, with a wide range of news, music and educational themes.

The new licence will be awarded for a period of eight years from 17 August 2003.

Copies of the applications will be available for scrutiny in the reference section of Wood Green Library and at the Radio Authority's offices. The Authority welcomes comments on the proposals put forward by the applicants, and upon the tastes and requirements of listeners in this area. These should be sent to the Director of Development, Radio Authority, Holbrook House, 14 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5DG, to arrive by Monday, 28 October.

The Authority expects to announce its decision about the award of the licence by the end of the year.

1. This licence was originally awarded to London Turkish Radio in 1994; its service came on air on 17 August 1995.

2. The Radio Authority is responsible for licensing and regulating Independent Radio in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Broadcasting Acts 1990 and 1996.
