NEW APPOINTMENTS TO THE CENTRAL ARBITRATION COMMITTEE

DTI Minister Stephen Timms today announced the appointment of two new
deputy chairs and 16 new members to the Central Arbitration Committee
(CAC).
The CAC is a permanent independent body whose main function is to
determine applications made by trade unions for recognition by
employers where these cannot be agreed voluntarily.
The new appointments are:

Welcoming the appointments, Mr Timms said:
"The record of achievement in employment relations of the new deputy
chairs and members will be immensely valuable to the CAC."
NOTES TO EDITORS
1. The new appointments were made by the Secretary of State,
following an open selection process conducted in accordance with the
guidance issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
2. The new members and deputies have been appointed from 1 August
2002 until 31 July 2005. They will receive payment for each day they
work on CAC business, currently £376 for deputies and £212 for
members.
3. Political Activities:.7 of the new appointees have undertaken
various activities on behalf of the Labour Party: Ms McKenna,
McKnight and Mercer, and Messrs Leahy, Lyons, Purkiss and Scard.
4. Ministerial Appointments: 5 of the new appointees hold other
Ministerial appointments, most of which are paid. These are Messrs
Chapman, Scard and Taker, and Ms Mercer and Woods.
