Welsh Government carbon emissions fall by 18%

New figures published show that the Welsh Government cut its carbon emissions last year by 18 per cent.

The figures, in the UK Government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme Performance League Table, place the Welsh Government in the top three of all UK Government departments and devolved administrations.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency (CRC) Scheme requires over 2,000 private companies and public sector organisations across the UK, including government departments, to report their carbon emissions annually.

Welsh Government carbon emissions fell from 18,056 tonnes in 2010-11 to 14,837 tonnes in 2011-12 – a reduction of 18 per cent. As a result, the Welsh Government has moved up from 320th in 2010-11 to 71st in the 2011-12 table.

The findings take into account emissions from Welsh Government and Cadw buildings as well as the trunk road network in Wales.

Welcoming the figures during Climate Change Week, Environment and Sustainability Minister, John Griffiths, said:

“We are determined to lead by example and do all we can as a Government to minimise our own carbon emissions and reduce our impact on the environment.

“These latest figures show that our action to reduce carbon emissions is paying off through investment in energy efficiency measures and new, larger more efficient buildings in place of older buildings. We are also improving carbon management of our trunk road network, our castles and heritage sites, and the property we own which houses a range of Welsh businesses.

“While we are pleased with our efforts so far, we are not complacent and will continue to build on these achievements.”
