10,000 Reward Offered On Cleckheaton Robbery Attack

5 Mar 2008 04:53 PM A £10,000 reward has been put up for anyone with information that helps police catch those responsible for the brutal stabbing of a security guard during an armed robbery in Cleckheaton.

The 32-year-old guard was stabbed whilst making a cash delivery to Tesco supermarket, in Northgate, Cleckheaton, at about 2pm on Monday, November 12, 2007. Disturbingly, he was stabbed after the two robbers had already got the money from him.

Security firm G4S has put up the reward and West Yorkshire Police are today making a fresh appeal to anyone who may have any information about the incident.

The victim was seriously injured and was left in a critical condition in hospital. He has since left hospital and continued his recovery at home.

Detective Inspector Lisa Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police’s Crime Division, is leading the investigation.

She said: “A totally unwarranted level of violence was used by these men and it is important that we trace them as soon as possible. The fact that the guard was stabbed when the offenders had already got the money is particularly disturbing.

“We have had some very positive lines of enquiry and received some good information. However, we need further assistance from the public to bring these people to justice.

“If you know anything which may add to the information we have already gained, it could be the extra stepping stone to tracking down these dangerous offenders.

“Hopefully the reward put forward by G4S will be an added impetus in encouraging people to come forward and tell us anything they know that could assist our investigation.”

The two robbers left the area in a black Seat Leon driven by a third man. That car was found abandoned a short time later on Birkett Street and the suspects are believed to have made their escape in a silver Audi Estate.

DI Atkinson said: “What I am now asking, is that people think back to November and try to remember anything they saw, anything which might have seemed unusual or suspicious. We know the offenders left the scene in a black Seat Leon which had been stolen from the Knaresborough area of North Yorkshire on October 30. Did you see this car between October 30 and November 12? Did you see it in the area shortly before the robbery on November 12?

“Did anyone see these men abandon the black Seat on Birkett Street and drive off in a silver Audi?

“Tesco was very busy at the time of the incident and there were a lot of people around. If you were there and witnessed any part of this incident, please come forward and tell us what you saw. What you know could be vital to our investigation.

“Finally, I would appeal to anyone who might know who did this to get in touch, anonymously and in confidence, using the Crimestoppers number. These are clearly dangerous people who are prepared to use extreme violence unnecessarily and they need to be caught.”

Anyone with any information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police investigating the stabbing of a 32 year old security guard have released stills of the Seat Leon that was found abandoned.

He was stabbed whilst he was making a cash delivery to an ATM at Tesco supermarket on Northgate in Cleckheaton on Monday 12th November at around 2pm.

He is currently in a critical condition at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

Detective Superintendent Chris Thompson of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team is leading the investigation and said: “We know that he had put up a struggle and it was only after the offenders got the money that they stabbed him.

“This has had a devastating effect on the guards family and it is imperative that we trace the people responsible as soon as possible.

“The level of violence used in the attack was completely unwarranted and unnecessary.

“We know that the offenders left the scene in a black Seat Leon. This Seat Leon was stolen from the Knaresborough area on 30th October. Where was the car between 30th October and 12th November?

“We also know that the offenders abandoned the car on Birkett Street and then made off in a silver Audi – did you see them do this on Monday.

“Tesco was very busy at that time and we need people to come forward and give us descriptions. Please don’t assume that we have all the details because a lot of people were there.

“There was clearly an element of planning in the attack – did you see the Seat Leon in the area in the days running up to the robbery?

“These men are dangerous and obviously prepared to use unnecessary violence to get what they want. We need to arrest them as soon as possible.”
