Breast cancer scans possible with a 25 times reduced radiation dose

24 Oct 2012 01:35 PM

Scientists have developed a way to produce 3D breast cancer scans with a spatial resolution two to three times higher but with a radiation dose 25 times lower, than current hospital scanners. The capacity for breast tissue to deal with radiation is one of the main obstacles for conventional CT (or computed tomography) scans. In addition current scans are 2D, rather than 3D.

The technique has been tested using the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble. STFC manages the UK subscription to ESRF, allowing UK scientists access to the facility.

The results of this innovative method were published in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) for the week beginning 22 October 2012.
