Consultation launches on homelessness statistics

6 Dec 2011 11:43 AM

Proposed changes to the data collected and published on homelessness opens to public consultation yesterday as the Welsh Government aims to ensure homelessness information remains relevant, accurate and meets the needs of users.

The six week consultation also considers proposals to introduce a new data collection that records homelessness prevention and relief.

Under the current system, which has been in place since 2002, homelessness statistics for each of Wales’ 22 Local Authorities are issued quarterly. The data helps the Welsh Government to develop policies on its homelessness agenda whilst allowing local authorities to monitor what is happening locally and nationally.

Amongst the new proposals is the collection of more comprehensive and accurate data on the reasons for loss of home.

Housing, Regeneration and Heritage Minister Huw Lewis:

“The prevention of homelessness is a priority for this Welsh Government.

“Statistical evidence can provide insight into what is happening and where, and under the proposed changes we can also gain greater evidence of how people have become homeless. This data can help us understand the trends and develop our prevention policies, so it is important the information is as accurate and up to date as possible.”

The review of homelessness data fulfils Welsh Government commitments under its Ten year Homelessness Strategy and the Programme for Government.

The consultation runs from 5 December to 16 January and can be accessed on the Welsh Government website.
