MARITIME AND
COASTGUARD AGENCY News Release (119-08) issued by The Government
News Network on 9 May 2008
At half past seven
this morning Clyde Coastguard received a call from fishing vessel
'Oceania' reporting that they had run aground just
outside of Troon Harbour with five persons on board.
Clyde Coastguard requested Androssan Coastguard Rescue Team and
Troon RNLI Lifeboat attend the scene to assist the stricken vessel.
Shortly after the lifeboat arrived on scene they vessel was able
to refloat itself. Although the Master reported that he was still
able to steer the vessel, the vessel's diesel tank had been
ruptured and an amount of diesel oil was now leaking.
Discussions then followed regarding where the vessel ought to be
towed, taking into consideration the leaking fuel. Once it was
reported that the diesel tank had ceased to emit any more fuel oil
the vessel was then taken into Troon Harbour where it will later
go on to a local boatyard for repairs.
Clyde Coastguard Watch Manager Jackie Lewis said:
"All five crew are still on board the fishing vessel, which
is a local vessel that operates out of Troon.
After discussions with the Harbour Master, vessel owners and
ourselves the vessel has now been towed in to Troon Harbour by
Troon Lifeboat with the intention of it later going on to Fairlie Boatyard.
The vessel is no longer leaking fuel oil and a large portion of
the diesel in the water has now been dispersed by the movements of
the high speed ferry and other vessel traffic in the area."
