Friends hold key to getting kids active

Kids are more likely to keep fit and active if they exercise with their best friend, according to new BHF funded research from the University of Bristol.

The research, led by Dr. Russ Jago and colleagues in the Centre for Exercise Nutrition and Health Sciences, studied 10 and 11 year olds.

Natasha Stewart, BHF Cardiac Nurse said “This research proves the strength of buddy power - simply exercising with a best friend or having a friend who’s into energetic activities like riding their bike or playing football increases the chance of a child keeping active.

"We know that kids who exercise during childhood are more likely to continue these good habits as they grow up - reducing their risk of heart and circulatory disease.

“We’re currently faced with a generation of kids whose waistlines are expanding. This research shows that easy initiatives like encouraging your child to run around with their best friend could have a big impact on their health.”

We have a range of resources to help keep children and young people fit and active.
