International Health Summit Broadcast Live to the NHS

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH News Release (2007/0329) issued by The Government News Network on 16 November 2007

NHS staff will next week be able to watch some of the worlds leading health experts live online at a unique international clinical summit in London.

The summit, hosted by Health Minister Lord Ara Darzi, will bring together leading figures from a wide range of clinical specialities and backgrounds from the UK, US, Canada and Europe. Discussions will focus on sharing their experience and learning with NHS staff and stakeholders who are involved in shaping the future of the NHS through the Our NHS, Our Future review.

A core part of the programme will focus on bringing together the clinical pathway working groups who are leading the Our NHS, Our future review in each strategic health authority region, with the aim of stimulating discussion on how to deliver the best outcomes for patients across England.

Keynote speeches from the event will be broadcast live from 14.20-19.00 on Wednesday 21 November, and available for viewing afterwards at: http://www.livegroup.co.uk/internationalclinicalsummit

Speakers include David Levine, President and Executive Director of the Montreal Health and Social Service Agency: and Dr Jack Cochran, Executive Director of the Permanente Federation (Kaiser Permanente), who will talk about redesigning healthcare systems and creating additional services outside hospitals.

Lord Ara Darzi will address the summit on Wednesday 21 November. Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson will close the session on day one and Secretary of State for Health Alan Johnson will close the summit on day two.

NOTES TO EDITORS

1. The summit will be held from 21-22 November in central London. Plenary sessions on 21 November will be followed on day two with delegates working in breakout sessions to look at common challenges and how the lessons learned from elsewhere in the NHS and abroad might be relevant for future models of care in their areas.

2. The interim report on the 'Our NHS, Our Future' review, published on October 4, sets out Lord Darzi's emerging vision to develop an NHS which will deliver effective, higher quality services that are safe, personalised to individual needs, and equally available to all.
