Visually Impaired People
82 yrs old (CARTERTON,
OXFORDSHIRE)
She has been highly successful in raising the
profile of the English National Association of Visually
Handicapped Bowlers, as well as representing her country both
nationally and internationally. She was registered blind in 1976
following a battle with advanced glaucoma; but, in 1980 she joined
the City and County Bowls Club, where her love of the sport began.
She continued to play for the club for a number of years, holding
the title and medals as the only blind bowler in Carterton. In
1986 she joined the Cheltenham and Gloucester Visually Handicapped
Bowls Club. In 1988 she won the Sports for All Trophy for
Oxfordshire and later went on to represent England and Great
Britain in World Lawn Bowls, winning five England gold medals, two
Great Britain gold medals, as well as World gold, silver and
bronze medals. In 1990 she was part of the Great Britain Team at
the Auckland Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, competing in the
women's visually impaired singles, and women's singles
blind competitions. She was then called upon to compete at the
1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games in Canada, as well as the 1997
Atlanta Paralympics. Since then, she has gone from
strength-to-strength in the bowling world. She has been a leading
light in Carterton and is a positive role model for people with
physical disabilities. She retired from competition in 2002 but
remains a prominent figure on the UK circuit. In addition to
bowling, she has been extremely active working for the Oxfordshire
Blind Association - raising thousands of pounds for charity. Her
work with disabled and visually impaired people has also led her
to establish the Witney Talking News for the Blind
Service.
Dr. Gwendoline Owen
Pauline, Mrs.

Maria, Mrs. Radice For sevices to the community in
Kendal, Cumbria
65 yrs old (KENDAL, CUMBRIA)
For the past
16 years she has made valuable contributions in a variety of
activities. She is currently a GP practice nurse but all her other
activities are voluntary. Since 1991 she has been involved with
the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and annually undertakes to
accompany sick people to Lourdes as leader of the nursing team and
has received the second highest award in The Order. In 2000 she
became an active member of the Lord Longford Trust where she
advises on issues in prisons and on potential speakers for the
annual lectures and also mentors two ex-prisoners. In 2003 as a
result of her work with the prison service she is now a volunteer
with the Shannon Trust where she is involved with the toe to toe
project, teaching prisoners to read. She is also a supporter of
the Inside Out Trust and the Prison Reform Trust. She also helps
run Breatheasy a support and education group for people with
chronic chest problems and organises the monthly group meetings
and hosts the annual garden party, providing the venue and
catering. She volunteers on integral campaigns to keep maternity
and mental health provisions at the local hospital. She sits on
the town council, advising the local MP on health issues and on
matters of concern that will make life better for the community.
Her selfless service to numerous organisations and individuals has
led to an enhanced quality of life for the community.

Miss Eileen Toner
Linda, Mrs. Tout Founder
and Leader, Young Searchers Charity, Kent. For services to Young
People
60 yrs old (CHATHAM, KENT)
She is the founder,
fundraiser and leader of the Young Searchers Club for girls
between the ages of 5-18. She founded the club, a registered
charity in 1995, drawing on her previous experience of being a
member of a Girls' Brigade. The club offers a varied
programme of activities, ranging from fitness aerobics, cookery,
and participation in the Adventure Challenge Scheme - a taster
before girls join the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Many
of the girls have attained the gold, silver and bronze awards. She
also encourages girls with special needs to participate in gaining
the awards. For a recent gold award in 2004, a trekking project to
the Himalayas was arranged, and she ensured the club made the
necessary arrangements for a girl with special needs to be able to
participate. Regular outings to leisure centres and places of
interest are arranged at which the girls choose subjects to
include in the award scheme, along with a wide range of interests
such as floral arranging, food hygiene and first aid. She
encourages parents to attend prize giving events and each year she
organises an indoor camping week in Kent. Through the Young
Searchers she encourages the girls to develop socially,
educationally and spiritually.

Mr. William Bond Founder, Battle of Britain
Historical Society. For services to Heritage
66 yrs old
(MELTON CONSTABLE, NORFOLK)
He has been highly instrumental in
ensuring that the sacrifices and memory of servicemen known as The
Few who lost their lives in the Battle of Britain will live on. He
founded the Battle of Britain Historical Society (BBHS) in 1996
after overhearing a conversation between two RAF senior officers
during the Battle of Britain Ball at RAF Coltishall. Neither knew
what the Battle of Britain (BB) was about. He and his very small
team went for a year without being paid, until 1997, when through
his efforts, the society obtained charitable status. He has
ensured that the society's aims to perpetuate the memory of
the BB, will guarantee its commemoration in future years, and also
assist in the renovation and maintenance of neglected graves of BB
airmen. He has been responsible for compiling and editing the
widely acclaimed, nationally distributed magazine Battle of
Britain Remembered. He also edits and contributes articles for the
society's monthly magazine Scrabble. Also in 1997 he had the
idea of creating a permanent monument to The Few in London. His
dream was finally realised in 2005 when the London Monument was
unveiled by The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of
Cornwall.

Mr. Bryan Smith Gardener and Caretaker, Brookwood
Military Cemetery. For public service
54 yrs old (CAMBERLEY,
SURREY)
He joined the Commission as a learner gardener at the
age of 15 and has progressed to Gardener Caretaker First Class. He
is a well known and popular face at Brookwood Military Cemetery
where he has spent his whole career of 38 years. He works
consistently to a very high standard and is an inspiration to his
colleagues who look to him always for advice and guidance. He has
an encyclopaedic knowledge of the cemetery and he regularly
conducts tours, most notably for Sandhurst Officer Cadets. The
college has praised these tours which help cadets to gain a very
real understanding of respect and remembrance, as well as
hammering home the real cost of war. He goes way beyond the
prescribed duties of his job and readily assists visitors in
locating relatives' graves, as well as providing a history of
interest in the graves from previous visitors. His understanding
and knowledge provides great comfort and reassurance to next of
kin. He is highly recommended, not only for his service but also
for his participation in the wider community who have an interest
in the cemetery, his dedication to honouring the memory of the war
dead and the support and comfort he provides.
