The second phase of a £29m development in Prince Charles Hospital is complete, giving patients in Merthyr Tydfil access to a state-of-the-art emergency care centre (ECC).

The Minister for Health and Social Services visited the newly-refurbished areas adjacent to the work carried out in phase one, which integrates the ECC with the day surgery unit (DSU).

This massive investment in Prince Charles Hospital’s new ECC will speed up treatment and substantially improve the emergency care environment for patients, including improved privacy and dignity, as well as providing much-improved facilities for staff to see and treat patients.

The modern ECC will also provide redesigned facilities for trauma, medical and surgical assessment services.

Now phase two is complete, it allows patients access via the new A&E main entrance and integration with the new DSU. It also enables the removal of asbestos and floor screed in adjoining vacated areas.

The Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths said:

“Together for Health is my five-year vision for the NHS in Wales - vision is about better health for all, improved access and patient experience and a commitment that better service safety and quality will improve health outcomes. This new emergency care centre is an excellent example of Together for Health in action.
“The people of Merthyr Tydfil can come to this centre with faith in the excellent staff here, to help them in their hour of need. It will speed up their treatment and substantially improve the emergency care environment for all patients, including improved privacy and dignity. I am sure the staff appreciate the much improved facilities as much as the patients.

“This investment of £29m in the emergency care centre is just part of the commitment to the major role that Prince Charles Hospital will continue to play in the region. You cannot fail to see the amount of work going on here and I am pleased to continue to support the progress of the business case to redevelop this strategic hospital in the coming years.”

Dr Chris Jones, chair of Cwm Taf Health Board, said:

“The population of Merthyr Tydfil and the heads of the valleys should, quite rightly, have access to the most modern facilities for the provision of accident and emergency medicine. The completion of the new emergency care centre and day surgery unit at Prince Charles Hospital delivers just that.

“These are exciting times for staff and patients – this new centre will improve access to care for the local population.

“These developments, together with the ongoing major ward refurbishment programme, reinforces the importance of Prince Charles Hospital and its future role in the provision of healthcare in South Wales.”
