Moves to deepen links between Catapults and UK Research Base

18 Oct 2013 03:46 PM
The UK's growing network of Catapult technology and innovation centres have a clear role to play in helping to deliver Sir Andrew Witty's call for universities to be given a bigger role in the economy.
The Catapults have been established by the UK's innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board, and are physical centres of excellence offering world-class research and development facilities to businesses.
Speaking yesterday at HE Expo at Olympia in London, Catapults Programme Director Simon Edmonds said:
"Sir Andrew Witty's Review delivers a strong message about the role of universities in the economy. The Catapult network is well placed to help deliver this and we are committed to stepping up our engagement with the research base.

"We've got an excellent foundation to build on as there is a huge amount of research base collaboration going on already, particularly in the more established High Value Manufacturing Catapult. Each one of the catapults has top-level representation from the HE/research sector either on their boards, within their teams or advisory groups. Now is the right time to extend and deepen these links as the capabilities in the seven centres continue to increase."

Catapults present an excellent route for the HE/research base to accelerate the commercialisation and impact of research in the UK, by working side by side with businesses in world-class, large-scale facilities, and can help unlock funding from other sources.
