15 Nov 2010 08:19 AM

NHS Scotland Chief Executive Dr Kevin Woods has published his last annual report, highlighting the performance of Scotland's NHS in the last year.

It shows that NHSScotland has made significant progress towards achieving its main performance and financial targets in 2009-10, in a year when NHS Scotland was at the forefront of the response to the H1N1 flu pandemic.

The overview highlights that in 2009/10 NHS Scotland:

  • achieved and exceeded its waiting times targets
  • completed 29,000 cardiovascular health checks for those most at risk through the implementation of Keep Well
  • achieved a 27.4 per cent reduction in the number of MRSA infections
  • achieved financial balance for every NHS Board
  • achieved a total of over 521million pounds million efficiency savings, exceeding the target by £108 million
  • established a new single and shared approach to becoming a world leader in healthcare quality

The NHS also achieved the early delivery of number of targets that are not due until 2010/11:

  • Achieved a 54 per cent reduction in Clostridium difficile infections against the target of 30 per cent by March 2011
  • Exceeded the target to register 80 per cent of children aged three to five with an NHS dentist
  • Exceeded the target for 90 per cent of patients to get access to general practice within 48-hours
  • Effectively delivered the nine-weeks inpatient and day case waiting times targets

Dr Woods, who leaves the Scottish Government next week to take up the post of chief executive and director-general of health at New Zealand's Ministry of Health, said:

"During the last year, the health service faced the challenges of pandemic flu, and the most severe winter for many years. I am delighted to say that NHS Scotland has responded well to these challenges and has delivered a number of significant achievements for the benefit of patients.

"None of this could have been possible without the continued hard work of NHS staff and I would like to thank them for the excellent care they provide to patients in Scotland. As I prepare to move on I am delighted that the health service is in such great shape, well placed to meet the challenges of the future. "
