New Chair of Civil Nuclear Police Authority appointed

Energy Minister Mike O'Brien today announced the appointment of Sir Chris Fox as the new Chair of the Civil Nuclear Police Authority (CNPA).

Mr O'Brien said:

"Sir Chris combines a strong background in policing at the most senior level with strategic management skills and I welcome him as Chair of the Authority. His experience as a distinguished public servant will be invaluable to this important role."

Notes to Editors

1. This appointment has been made in accordance with the requirements of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

2. This appointment was made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. In response to the political activity questionnaire to be completed by all applicants for public appointments, Sir Chris has declared that he has undertaken no declarable political activity.

3. Sir Chris will receive £25,000 per year as Chair of the Civil Nuclear Police Authority (CNPA).

4. Sir Chris has been appointed for four years from 1st April 2009. He was Chief Constable of Northamptonshire from 1996 to 2003 and President of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) from 2003 to 2006. Sir Chris holds no other ministerial appointments.

5. The CNPA is the public body which has oversight of, and employs, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, which provides a dedicated, on-site armed response capability for designated civil nuclear sites and designated movements of civil nuclear material.
