New Welsh language strategy – have your say

30 Nov 2009 02:05 PM
Do you want to play a part in shaping a new Welsh language strategy? The Welsh Assembly Government is reviewing its Welsh language strategy, 'Iaith Pawb', which was published in 2003.

Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones will be visiting different parts of Wales during December and January to discuss what should be in the new Welsh language strategy - and the future of the Welsh language.

Why not come along and share your ideas with us?

The events will be held on:

  • Thursday 3 December in Galeri, Caernarfon at 7pm
  • Monday 14 December in Theatr Clwyd, Mold at 7pm
  • Tuesday 15 December in the Welsh Assembly Government offices, Aberystwyth at 6.30pm for 7.00pm
  • Tuesday 12 January  in the Swalec Stadium, Cardiff at 7pm

This is an opportunity for everyone with an interest in the Welsh language to learn more about the strategy, share their views and provide suggestions on its development.  The events are open to all so it doesn’t matter if you are fluent, a learner or simply have an interest in the language.  Simultaneous translation will be provided.

Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones said:

“Developing a robust strategy for the Welsh language is vitally important, and we need input from as many people as possible.  The Assembly Government wants to work to ensure that more people, young and old, can learn, speak and use the language in their day to day lives.  We are also seeking to transfer legislative competence on the Welsh language to the National Assembly for Wales; having this will allow us to propose Assembly Measures to legislate for the language.  All of this work will contribute towards making us better equipped to achieve our goal of creating a truly bilingual Wales.”

The Minister will be accompanied by Merion Prys Jones, Chief Executive of the Welsh Language Board, which advises the Government on Welsh language issues

He said:

“As a Board, we are looking forward to these meetings and to having a full debate on the strategy.

“There are a lot of exciting developments in Wales at the moment, but we need to have a wider discussion about how to build on these developments.”
