“New management and finance master classes for NHS Finance Directors”

4 Oct 2007 03:44 PM

In a unique link-up for the NHS, Cass Business School, London, is to deliver a new Strategic Finance Leadership Programme for NHS Finance Directors.

The two-week-tailored executive education programme will run over the next two years and will draw on Cass’ significant expertise in finance and management, with support and input from a number of key stakeholders in the NHS. The programme aims to create world-class financial leadership in the NHS by keeping Finance Directors of NHS Trusts and other NHS institutions up-to-date with cutting-edge developments in the world of finance and management.

The programme – which was initiated by Monitor, the Independent Regulator of NHS Foundation Trusts – is sponsored by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and supported by the Department of Health. It will cover a range of subjects, including corporate governance, risk management, strategic planning and treasury management.

According to Stephen Hay Chief Operating Officer at Monitor, “Monitor’s experience as a regulator highlighted the challenges facing finance directors within the NHS. Providers and commissioners of healthcare need the skills to adapt to an increasingly competitive market, a rapidly changing environment and rising public expectations. We initiated this programme to support financial leaders and equip them for the future challenges of the health service.”

Dean of Cass Business School, Richard Gillingwater says: "This shows that business education has a critical role to play, in partnership with public sector organisations, helping them to improve performance, and, in this case, helping the NHS to improve the provision of healthcare for the benefit of the UK.”

Professor Scott Moeller, CEO and Director of Executive Education at Cass says: "We are delighted to have this opportunity to use our financial expertise and educational resources to help finance directors in the NHS keep up-to-date with the latest thinking in the fields of finance and management,” says Scott Moeller,

David Flory, Director General of NHS Finance, Performance and Operations at the Department of Health says: “Financial leaders perform a vital and highly skilled role within the NHS. This programme recognises the value of their contribution, and the need to support their development in a challenging and evolving health service. This partnership of key NHS stakeholders combined with expertise from Cass Business School has produced a first-class course to meet their requirements. We believe it will enable finance leaders to enhance their role in the NHS and deliver improved performance at their organisations”

On behalf of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, Michael Cawley, Executive Director of Finance says: “This programme will play a pivotal role in preparing our finance leaders and their organizations for the challenges of the Health Service Reform Agenda. It will provide opportunities for reflecting on current practice, as well as building the capabilities required for the future. It is ambitious in its goals and a significant investment in our people and their contribution in delivering outstanding patient care.”
